Riverside Recycling Centre update #dundeewestend

As residents will be aware, following Storm Babet and the continuing heavy rain since, the Riverside Recycling Centre has been closed due to flooding.

We asked the council for an update and received this on Friday from the Assistant Waste Services Manager :

"Despite ongoing efforts to pump hundreds of thousands of litres of flood water out of the site by both ground pumps and gully tankers, the Yellow weather warning and torrential rain has set us back a number of days with the water levels having increased again overnight.

Unfortunately we are not in a position to be able to give any indication of a likely re-opening date at this stage as the site must be fully cleared of standing water and a clean-up operation completed, and we are actively monitoring the situation on a daily basis.

Employee and public safety is our paramount focus, and we need to ensure the site is fully safe to re-open.

We will continue to provide website updates to the public as matters progress."

Insulation improvements - Pentland area #dundeewestend

Following a number of Dundee City Council tenants in Pentland asking about possible home insulation improvements for the council housing in the area, we took this up with the City Council.

The council's Head of Housing and Construction Services has responded as follows :

"I can confirm that all of the flats in Saggar Street fall into City Road 2nd development which was built in 1960 and has a brick/blockwork cavity. Therefore, it falls on our list of cavity areas. There are 57 Council flats left out of the total of 136 (60% owners) in the development.

As you know our focus has been external wall insulation and we are now progressing internal wall insulation solutions through a pilot to inform our wider capital programme. In addition, and as part of our forthcoming Energy Efficiency Strategy and Capital Plan, we are reviewing what the solutions are in terms of the cavity-wall stock. We are engaged with colleagues in the Legal Team to determine the solutions in respect of cavity for mixed tenure blocks also. In terms of the social index of multiple deprivation, the Saggar Street and surrounding area falls quite far down the list with 2 300 Council flats above it which are in relatively more deprived areas and so it is likely that Saggar Street will be later within the plan. I do not yet have timescales but once we further progress I can come back to you and advise.

Meantime if the tenant requires any support regarding their heating bills and energy efficiency, then we can make a referral to the Energy Advice Team."

Getting things done - Glenagnes Road and Scott Street #dundeewestend

Following residents mentioning to us that the foliage at the junction of of Glenagnes Road and Scott Street was very overgrown and reducing the width of the pavement/path there (see photo), we asked Home Group who has responsibility here to have this cut back.

We thereafter received this update from Home Group’s Operations Manager :

“Our maintenance surveyor attended the site several times and can advise the whole of Glenagnes Road and Scott St have all been faced off back beyond trip fence.”

The foliage had also been encroaching onto some back gardens in Logie Gardens and we were assured this was also attended to.

Further update on school buses to/from Harris Academy #dundeewestend

Residents will recall that, following concerns raised by parents and carers with us last term about insufficient capacity on one of the school buses to and from Harris Academy (the 6s – the pupils concerned live in the Pentland area), we raised the issue with the City Council.

We are pleased to have been updated by the transportation team at the council to say that at the north end of the route, from the start of the new term, pupils who who also have access to another of the school bus services will use service 10s instead of the 6s.    This will hopefully ensure that when the 6s arrives at stops further south going towards the school, there will be sufficient space left to ensure all pupils can get on the bus.

The school makes good efforts at the end of the school day to ensure pupils get on the most appropriate bus home and it is hoped that bus availability will improve for all pupils during the new term.

Getting things done - Hawkhill #dundeewestend

Residents will recall our previous updates about the poor pavement surface in Hawkhill west of the Peddie Street junction, around Sinderins Court.

We were pleased that the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership responded positively to our request for pavement surface improvements here and Fraser is pictured at the pavement during slurry seal improvement works, which have really improved the pavement surface here.

Getting things done - Rockfield Crescent #dundeewestend

As residents will recall, we have long campaigned to see improvements of the road surface in Rockfield Crescent, which has long been in a very poor state.

We were pleased when the roads maintenance partnership gave a commitment to resurface the road this financial year.

Michael is pictured during the works which have resulted in a much better road surface.
