Learn the ancient harp music of Scotland - here in Dundee

The Friends of Wighton are pleased to offer a taster session in medieval Scottish harp music, at Dundee Central Library, this Saturday.

Historical harp specialist Simon Chadwick will be on hand from 2pm - 4pm to demonstrate beautiful hand-crafted replicas of Scottish and Irish medieval harps - the type of harp shown on the Guinness logo - and like the harp of Mary, Queen of Scots, preserved in the National Museum in Edinburgh.

The venue is the beautiful Wighton Centre, which houses Dundee's collection of antique Scottish music books. Over 700 volumes, between 200 and 300 years old, were gifted to the city by the Victorian businessman Andrew Wighton, and have been preserved in the city library ever since. The Wighton centre, on the top floor of the Central Library in the Wellgate, is a welcoming and airy space, perfect for music and performance.

If there is enough interest, Simon will be running weekly classes in Dundee's Wighton Centre, teaching the ancient harp music. The classes, organised by the
Friends of Wighton, will run alongside the well-established classes in fiddle, whistle, Scots song and Gaelic song. The weekly class fees are only £5, with a special rate of £2.50 for under 25s. And this Saturday's come-and-try session is free!

There is no need to book: just turn up. No previous musical experience is necessary. Everything you need is provided in the class, and harps are available to rent if you want to take one home.
