Getting things done - Saggar Street - an update #dundeewestend

Last month, we highlighted that we had received further concerns from residents about the deteriorating condition of the roadway of Saggar Street - Michael is pictured near the junction with Pentland Crescent.

At the time we asked the roads maintenance partnership to undertake repairs, but, given its really poor state, also asked about the possibility of resurfacing the street which we feel badly needs done.

We have now received the following feedback from the roads maintenance partnership :

"Thank you for bringing the pothole issues on Saggar Street to our attention.       We understand the inconvenience and potential hazards these defects can cause.

We would like to inform you that Dundee City Council is actively addressing road maintenance issues through the Road Asset Management Plan.   This plan prioritises the repair and maintenance of road defects, including potholes, to ensure the safety and reliability of our road network.

Our team has scheduled an inspection of Saggar Street, and necessary repairs will be carried out."

Dundee - designing resilience into a fragile urban landscape

From Dundee Civic Trust :

Dundee, forever on the edge in both location and spirit, is faced with an immediate threat - climate breakdown. What lies ahead when our famed river rises? How will we meet the multi-challenge of increased storms, floods and droughts with extreme temperature swings in our neighbourhoods? What are the ways forward?

Dundee Civic Trust and a panel of experts invite you to an afternoon discussion, on 22nd March in the V&A Dundee, to explore and question the roles that design, business, science and education play in a community's resilience.

Please follow this link to book :

All welcome - there is a small charge for refreshments.

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee :

"Our new exhibition in the Lamb Gallery at the university's Tower Building has now opened.

A Big World of Small Things highlights parts of the University’s museum collections that relate to the small, the minute, the microscopic.

From molecular models to microscope slides and from embryos to babies, our collections reveal a world of the minuscule and how it has been collected, studied and interpreted over the years.

The exhibition is open until 25th April ... Monday to Friday 9.30am to 7pm (last entry 5pm)."

Getting things done - Seymour Street #dundeewestend

A resident recently advised us :

"This old battered and broken grit bin suddenly appeared out of the blue at the top right hand side of the lane at the bottom of Seymour Street. The top is dented in and the lid is broken off and there is only a sprinkling of grit in the bottom. It is now being used as a bin as people are chucking rubbish into it."

We raised this with the City Council requesting that a replacement grit bin be provided.

Roads and pavements improvements in the West End #dundeewestend

The City Council’s Roads Maintenance Partnership earlier this week published its proposed roads and footpaths resurfacing and improvements programme for the new financial year and the West End proposed work included :

Adopted Footway Programme 2025-26
• Lochee Road - Mitchell Street to Tullideph Road
• Perth Road - Westfield Place to Greenfield Place
• Tay Square - north west - replacement slabbing
• Annfield Street - south side full length
• Jedburgh Road - north side from Blackness Road to Kelso Street

Non-adopted programme 2025-26
• Balgay Cemetery - roads

Carriageway Resurfacing Programme 2025-26
• Roseangle - improvements to the setts - this work is actually carried over from 2024-25
• Jedburgh Road - full length
• Ancrum Road and Charleston Drive - Elmwood Road to No. 69 Ancrum Road (the Charleston Drive section is not in the West End Ward)

Any pavements and roads improvements are welcome and we are pleased that our constant highlighting of the awful state of Jedburgh Road has resulted in it being included in the resurfacing programme. However, we had also asked for Kelso Street and Kelso Place that adjoin Jedburgh Road and are in a poor state be included.

Sadly, we have been informed by the Roads Maintenance Partnership Manager as follows :

"Kelso was initially considered, but due to the conditions of carriageways elsewhere in the city, it was ultimately excluded. I understand that this decision may be frustrating, but it was unavoidable due to budget constraints."

The roads and pavements budget is wholly inadequate and far too few roads and footpaths are being upgraded. It is very clear from recent years' programmes that many years of SNP under-investment in pavements and roads is leading to this situation.

At the council’s revenue budget, the Liberal Democrat Group proposed an additional £1 million next year for roads resurfacing and £500 000 on pavements resurfacing to properly tackle the state of many footpaths and road surfaces that we get so many complaints about.    No other party tried to improve the roads and footpaths resurfacing funding in their budget proposals.

Unfortunately, the SNP voted down the LibDem budget proposals 15-5, but we continue to campaign for roads and pavements improvements across the West End.
