Getting things done - Oxford Street and Eton Street #dundeewestend

Residents have raised the issue of the missing goal posts at the Oxford Street/Eton Street grass area.   The former ones are pictured below.

We raised this with the City Council and have received helpful feedback as follows from our local environment manager :

"I am aware that the eleven a side goals were removed from this location some time ago and that this site is no longer a bookable and useable eleven a side pitch for association football matches.

However, I have discussed this site with colleagues to provide a suitable “kick about area” for local children by installing a smaller football area for use, although this will be an unmarked pitch.

We have provisional plans to install / form the smaller football area using smaller seven a side sized goals. I have no provisional timeframe for the installation at this time but we are progressing towards this.

Please leave this with me and I will provide you with an additional update as soon as possible."

Michael is pictured at the Victoria Park tennis courts where, despite being refurbished in the fairly recent past, the courts' surface, particularly at the western end, has begun to suffer as a result of falling debris from the surrounding trees.

We therefore asked environment management to have the courts properly swept to ensure all are in a useable condition.

We had a helpful response from an environment manager as follows :

"We will have this looked at and dealt with."

Skylarks at Riverside Nature Park #dundeewestend

From the City Council :

"Visitors to Riverside Nature Park are being reminded to take care when navigating the area in order to keep ground-nesting birds safe, ahead of the start of the skylark breeding season.

Riverside Nature Park, which was created on an area of landfill by the River Tay, is now home to the largest wildflower meadows in the city and is a popular spot for walkers and dog owners.

In order to protect the ground-nesting birds, such as skylarks, the council and the Friends of Riverside Nature Park Group are again asking walkers to be careful at the Nature Park from April to August, and to keep on paths with dogs on leads.

The measures in place, and the public keeping to them, have helped the skylarks to achieve an impressive increase in the number of birds at Riverside, despite a general decline of the bird species across the UK.

Skylarks are currently on a national red list, which is compiled by a number of conservation organisations and contains the species most at-risk in the UK."

Ian Kennedy - Celebrating a Comics Legend

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee :

Ian Kennedy - Celebrating a Comics Legend
Lamb Gallery, Tower Building, University of Dundee

Ian Kennedy (1932-2022) is a legend in British comics. Acclaimed and respected by fans and fellow artists alike, his career in comics spanned over 70 years.

Born and educated in Dundee, Ian began work as a trainee illustrator in the Art Department at DC Thomson & Co in 1949. In 1954 he became a freelance artist and began doing work for Amalgamated Press in London as well as Thomson in Dundee. He became particularly known for his work in war comics, which led to his long association with DC Thomson’s Commando, illustrating well over a thousand covers between 1970 and 2022.

In the late 1970s he moved more into science fiction and fantasy, creating work for 2000AD and Starblazer as well as drawing Dan Dare for the relaunched Eagle. Although semi-retired from 1997, Ian continued to work on Commando and other projects up until his death last year.

Ian leaves behind a huge legacy that will continue to inspire comics fans for generations to come. We are delighted to present this exhibition featuring a selection of original art from Ian's studio and from the collections of DC Thomson. It features work from throughout his career as well as fascinating insights into his creative process.

Now on and runs until Saturday 6th May 2023.   Open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 7pm and 11am to 4pm on Saturdays.
