50 Shades of Tay – A Flash Fiction Celebration

Dundee Writing Group, the Nethergate Writers, has published a new volume of flash fiction.

50 Shades of Tay comprises fifty 50-word pieces of prose and poetry that celebrate people and places along the Tay.

There’s something for everyone in this pocket-sized book.   From memories of the Fifie, to sledging on the Law; reflections on the river to the wonders of karaoke at Dundee’s Club Bar.

Nethergate Writers collaborated with local design studio, Pulse North, to create images to accompany some of the pieces and a striking cover design that takes its visual cues from the river.

The book will be launched at Waterstones Dundee at 6pm this Thursday - 23rd August - and the Nethergate Writers invite readers old and new to join them in celebrating their favourite Shades of Tay.

33rd Annual General Meeting of the One World Centre

You are warmly invited to attend the 33rd Annual General Meeting of the One World Centre on Tuesday 21st August which is to be held in Lecture Theatre 1 (LT1) on the ground floor of the Dalhousie Building on University of Dundee’s main campus.  Staff and committee members will be welcoming attendees from 5.15pm with a group photo planned before the talk at 5.30pm.

This year we are very fortunate to have Dr. Husam AlWaer, Senior Lecturer at the University of Dundee, joining us to talk about his research on the urbanism of refugee camps.  Often considered as temporary places built in response to a crisis, the truth is that these camps exist for years, and Dr. AlWaer will show that when refugees can make changes to their space, they can make changes to their lives.

The AGM is built around the idea that everyone has a story, and along with Dr. AlWaer, One World Centre will celebrate the differences that can be made by sharing stories; stories that we hear and stories we are a part of.  With this in mind, we will hold a collection on behalf of Lend With Care - www.lendwithcare.org - which provides access to sustainable funds and allows recipients to change their own story.

From 6.30pm there will be refreshments and information about One World World Centre, including Annual Reports.  Membership forms and Nomination forms for the Management Committee will be available throughout the evening.

Spaces are limited so please click here to book your place now.

Hogmanay Celebrations Grant Scheme

From the City Council :

Dundee City Council has allocated money from its Common Good Fund to continue its grant scheme to support groups that wish to organise community events to celebrate Hogmanay.

Applications are invited from Dundee based community groups and cultural organisations which are planning to organise non-commercial celebrations to mark Hogmanay. The celebrations do not have to be on Hogmanay itself, but can take place between Saturday, 29th December 2018 and Thursday, 3rd January 2019.

This year, we are particularly looking for applications that :

- Involve a wide range of the local community
- Give a sense that it is Hogmanay that is being celebrated
- Have the potential to develop community spirit and additional joint activities going forward into 2019

The application form can be found at www.tinyurl.com/hogmanay-dundee or requested via email to Paul Davies paul.davies@dundeecity.gov.uk.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 30th September, and the decision making group will then meet in October.

Public Art Uploadathon

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee :

We need your help to record Dundee’s amazing collection of public art!

Over the summer we’ve been working with volunteers to map and photograph artworks across Dundee, and we now have over 400 on our list! Now we need your help to upload images and information onto Historic Environment Scotland's Urban Detectives website.

We’re holding a special uploadathon (is that a word? It is now!) in the Dalhousie Building, University of Dundee on Saturday 11th August 10am-1pm.

The event will take place in IT suite 1G01 so everyone will have access to a PC to add data and pictures to the site.

You can either bring your own images of public art in Dundee or use the ones our volunteers have already taken.

Don't worry if you've never used Urban Detectives before - it's very simple and we can take you through the process.

The event runs over 3 hours but please come for as much or as little of that time as you like.

Refreshments will be provided to keep us all going!

Please book a place here.     Please also note - if you have not already done so, you will need to register as an Urban Detective BEFORE the event here.

Lunchtime Recital with Kirsty Law

For the third of our Year of Young People Lunchtime Recitals we are delighted to welcome the wonderful Kirsty Law.

Kirsty Law is an innovative young vocalist and song-maker based in Edinburgh.   The mainstay of her musical education came from learning Scots ballads and folk songs from tradition bearers such as Sheila Stewart, Cathal McConnell and Margaret Bennett.

Today she draws on this experience in her own composition, often writing in a ‘patchwork’ style, layering and combining original and traditional melodies, poems and text - and incorporating contemporary sounds alongside her rich Scots vocal. Her song ‘Hymn For A Shepherd’ has been mentioned in the Scottish Parliament and she has released two albums and one EP.

Working with artists of different mediums has come to be the lifeblood of her work - performing alongside poets, storytellers and sound artists as well as responding to the work of contemporary visual artists and filmmakers.
