Encampment at the Technology Park

Encampment at Luna Place earlier today
As reported in tonight's Evening Telegraph, constituents late yesterday expressed concern to me that a group of travelling people have set up camp in Luna Place at the entrance to the former Etal Ltd vacant factory unit.   The unit – in the Dundee Technology Park - has been empty since 2010 when the furniture manufacturer ceased Dundee operations.

A particular concern is that very young children from the encampment are playing adjacent to the main road.   There are concerns at times at the speed of some vehicles on Explorer Road, particularly out of hours when traffic is light.   It is not a place for young children to be playing near to.

I have been in contact with Dundee City Council’s Chief Executive and the council’s Housing Department regarding the situation.   Scottish Enterprise is in ownership of much of the Dundee Technology Park.

The City Council owns a well-managed traveling people's site at Balmuir Wood near Tealing that provides good facilities for the travelling community.

UPDATE FROM CITY COUNCIL LATER TODAY :

“The City Council visited the illegal encampment this morning with a representative on behalf of the land owner and also Tayside Police.  A 24h Notice was served on the travellers and it is their intention to vacate the land by Sunday 17th June.  There was no evidence of loose litter on the site, they have possibly cleared this as they had rubbish bags at their caravans for their waste.”
