Slippy pavements

I have again highlighted to the City Engineer the continuing concerns of many constituents about extremely slippy pavements caused by ice.

I have impressed upon the City Council the need to get icy pavements in residential streets tackled. I have already been advised by constituents of residents falling and injuries as a result - and the rain on Monday night and freeze thereafter has made the pavements situation worse.

The City Engineer advised me late last night as follows :

“Unfortunately the partial thaw with rain and then freeze has caused problems throughout the city.

All available miniploughs 15No were out gritting today but mainly on the priority footways and intermediate routes at schools.

Tomorrow the miniploughs will concentrate on gritting the backup footway routes.

We have had an additional resource in from DCS and Leisure & Communities who have been treating footways etc at Social Work properties and Sheltered Housing. This additional resource will continue tomorrow and longer if necessary and will be targetted at areas of concern that have been brought to our attention or through inspection.

We also still have the additional 10 excavators and associated lorries working in various locations throughout the ward areas.”
